Who are you and what do you do?

Hello there! I'm Maddy Jones aka Maddy Shine because I run an SEO consultancy called Making Your Business Shine which is exactly what I love to do. My mission is to help passionate creative women get more sales through getting found onlineand I’m lucky to be affectionately known as the SEO Queen by my clients. Obsessed with the web from an early age (I designed my first website as a teenager before most of my friends had the internet) I now love to combine of working with wonderful women with my love of geekery and a good dash of strong pink lipgloss. I live in London, but regularly travel all over Instagram, in my fun Facebook group So Exciting Obviously SEO for Creative Women and you can check out my website:http://www.business-shine.co.uk/

What inspired/motivated you to create your business? I was working in a 9-5 in London for years and I realised I wanted so much more but I didn't know where to start and I was frankly terrified of failure. When I was made redundant in 2010 I took my payout and went to India where I shifted my perspective entirely thanks to a meditation training I met called Balanced View. I realised I wanted to use my natural talents more, travel more, and I wanted freedom and independence and to spend time with people who felt the same way, so I started freelancing. This coincided with getting engaged and meeting the wedding industry where I found my first niche which has now opened up to all creative women. I travelled the world for years before returning to London in 2019.  I still travel all over the world participating in retreats, I am now happily divorced, and living my best life. I receive messages from women all over the world telling me I inspire them in their lives, which is wonderful and heart warming and spurs me on to do more.

What advice would you give others wanting to start a business? Or rise up through the ranks?Don't let fear be the reason not to do something new or push yourself further. I still use this piece of advice to myself. Keep a list of your favourite client testimonials closeby along with any other compliments and positive messages you've received. It helps! Don't be an unhappy martyr. If you're offering a product or service, no matter how popular but your heart isn't in it, find something else to serve the people you love to work with.  Figure out what problem those people have and find a great solution.  Stay solution focused even when your clients are not. Work on building your business when you're busy, don't wait for it to be quiet as otherwise you'll make panic moves. Focus on being really good and profitable at the product or service you're selling, everything else is secondary, not meaningless, just not as important. Learn to trust in yourself and keep going. Make a plan, but you can change that plan at any time and however often you wish to. Be kind, honest and never vent frustrations to your target audience. Instead find a mentor or support network on whom you can 100% rely.  Don't take your thoughts and emotions as permanent, they are fleeting and you will not feel like this all the time.

What have you learnt on your journey as a business owner?

That there are no shortcuts and hard work is the best way to achieve long lasting success. To enjoy myself more along the way and to not wait for a moment in the future to do the fun stuff. To remember your reasons why you're doing this. To be grateful for everything.

What has been the toughest challenge being your own boss? Being in such a high position? I used to think that the cliche of being lonely or tough at the top couldn't apply to me as I'm a really social person. It's important not to isolate myself from others just because they don't want to talk about work (this makes you a really boring person haha) and it can be hard to take time off and not be so gruelling on myself. But I'm not a robot, I am a human bean with a heart and passion to help everyone around me, and that is perfectly fine!

What is the best thing about being your own boss?  I adore the freedom and the independence. I love that I don't have to ask for anyone's permission to do anything including launching new services or taking time off!

Seven random facts about yourself

1. I used to live in Goa, India 2. I have a daily meditation practice that helps me to relax no matter what comes up and stay solution-focused  3. I used to teach English to Tibetans in the Himalayas 4. I feel naked unless I'm wearing earrings, the bigger and more colourful the better 5. No one told me how obsessed with my niece I would be as an aunt, now I want her image tattooed on the inside of my eyelids 6. I love to be silly and dance on Instagram Stories - people send in song requests! 7. I could eat carbonara every day for the rest of my life. I would die prematurely, of course, but I would die happy.
