Who are you and what do you do?
Hey hey hey :) I’m Kerry Lyons, I’m the creator of The Imperfect Life® and I help creative women find and live their thing (and love the messy adventure of making it happen!)
What inspired/motivated you to create your business?
It was so many things in honesty. After becoming a mama a few years ago, I felt pulled to create a more purposeful business that allowed me to do more than just earn money, I wanted to give something back and have a reason bigger than me if I was going to have to spend time away from my daughter working. Creating a lifestyle that worked for my new family was really important to me too and working as a designer (as I had done for 16 years, and exchanging time for money) just couldn’t deliver that. I also experienced depression and a full-on quarter-life crisis about 12 years ago and since I came out the other side, I felt almost responsible and ‘called’ to create a space that I needed, but didn’t have at the time; a space that had the kind of resources and support I’d needed, so other women didn’t have to go through what I went through. And so, The Imperfect Life® was born!
What advice would you give others wanting to start a business? Or rise up through the ranks?
Don’t give up. Like seriously. If you know you want something, if you have a lingering desire that just won’t go away, that’s your heart telling you what it wants. Don’t deny your heart what it wants! That lingering desire won’t go away, but the longer you wait, your confidence and belief in your ability to pursue it will dwindle. Which basically translates to a lifetime of regret. And I don’t know much that feels worse than regret. Your journey there isn’t supposed to be easy, that’s why most people don’t follow their dreams and do it, but I can 100% promise you, the messy adventure there is worth it :)
What have you learnt on your journey as a business owner?
That the challenges of running a business, especially when you’re very much a face of your brand, is actually §90% mindset, and only 10% logistics. You *think* the problems are not knowing how to do stuff, but that’s the easy bit! The hardest bit is identifying and working through your limiting beliefs, fears, expectations, all that stuff instead!
What has been the toughest challenge being your own boss? Being in such a high position?
Oh gosh, there’s a few! And I don’t know if I see myself in a ‘high position’ :D but right up there, I’d say was an incident last year where I unintentionally let down some of my most loyal customers through a poor business decision I made. It was the most painful thing I’d ever experienced in my business as they feel like my family. Knowing I’d upset them, especially unintentionally was so heartbreaking I cried for days! But it was a huge lesson, and that’s when you know that you’re growing and improving! When you’re making mistakes and wringing the juicy lessons outta them!
What is the best thing about being your own boss?
Freedom freedom freedom! The freedom to create anything you want. The freedom to live my life in the way that I want. The freedom to earn what I want.
