Who are you and what do you do?

Hello. My name is Nova. I am a diversity campaigner and anti-racism educator (www.novareid.com)  and I help people be the change they want to see in the world through training, workshops and online courses for businesses and individual change-makers. I am also founder of Nu Bride (www.nubride.com) a wedding website and UK's first wedding show dedicated to diversity. What inspired/motivated you to create your business?

It was a bit of an accident!I got frustrated as a modern British woman who is also black planning for a wedding day and feeling completely invisible. It was like black women and couples didn't exist. I would be given tanning product after tanning product at wedding shows,  flicking through magazine after magazine of several hundred pages without any visual representation of women who looked like me. I wanted to simply see what make up might look like on my skin tone, or wedding hairstyles might look like on me. I gave up hoping to be represented in the end and was motivated to start my own business after feeling so excluded by the industry and mainstream wedding magazines, so created my own wedding platform that addressed everything I felt was lacking from the industry. What started out to be a rant turned out to be a career and lifestyle change. It was never meant to be a business but my message resonated with others, and after 4 years of running Nu Bride alongside paid employment, I decided to believe in myself and take the leap and only wish I had done it sooner and my work with Nu Bride has now catapulted me into being invited to the Royal Wedding and working with Sky News and the BBC and educating about the value and importance of race equality and diversity and working with incredible human beings and organisations like Change.org and Lufthansa.

What advice would you give others wanting to start a business? Or rise up through the ranks?

Find your niche, research your industry. Use your paid employment to help you prepare to leap and save. Have a financial buffer to support you in the first couple of years where you will be spending more than you are earning. Seek investment  and delegate (just because it is your baby, you don't have to do it all on your own!) get a support network of other people who get it. Family and friends love you, but they might not understand or support your decision to leave a well paid job to pursue your own business. It takes courage and risk to start your own business, surround yourself by people who get it and are going to cheer you on. You are going to need them when the self-doubt kicks in. Oh and my biggest tip? Remove your work emails from your mobile phone.  What have you learnt on your journey as a business owner?

That not everyone wants to see you do well. Sad but true.  That self care is vital. You cannot focus, excel, innovate or create new ideas when you are burnt out or working every hour under the sun. Treat yourself like you would your best employee. Factor in time for you, self care and time off into your working week. What has been the toughest challenge being your own boss? Being in such a high position?

Accountability - you are responsible for the money you make, you are responsible for every aspect of your business. With that comes great freedom and great responsibility. When things go wrong it can be hard not to align your worth as a human being with the success of your business,  What is the best thing about being your own boss?

I can work with who I choose to. I can have a day off, or go on holiday without having to ask permission. Seven random facts about yourself
