This week I have two very funky expressive women who you will just want to be friends with! They have incredible infectious energy and designs to die for.
I feel very honoured to have an extremely talented award winning illustrator duo Jill Deerimg and Gill Henderson on the feature this week. I'm bang into colours and prints and these two have really combined their creative abilities to create some vibrant fashion pieces and art.
Who are you and what do you do? Jill & Gill is an Irish brand of illustrators and printmakers working across fashion and fine art.
This multidisciplinary studio is made up of creative duo Jill Deering ‘illustrator' and Gillian Henderson ‘printmaker’.
Jill & Gill Apparel launched officially in July 2018, is made with respect, meets demanding ethical standards and is based on exclusivity and craftsmanship.
As a sustainable brand, Jill & Gill are proud to work with suppliers that are associated with the Fair Wear Foundation, an independent organisation that encourages social best practice and equality in the fashion and textile industry. We encourage our customers to make a conscious investment in our apparel.
When it comes down to the design, it's more than just a t-shirt or a sweater, it's
'A celebration through print, illustration, and style' uniquely illustrated and hand printed in Dublin.
What inspired/motivated you to create your business?
Jill & Gill was established in April 2016 while collaborating on a print commission together, things just clicked and the business has grown organically since then.
What advice would you give others wanting to start a business? Or rise up through the ranks?
Go to events and network, even if it means going on your own. Social media is a great way to push your business but people still love to connect with the person behind the business. Push yourself outside your comfort zones but also be open to asking for help.
What have you learned on your journey as a business owner? To ask for help, just because you started your business yourself does not mean you have to go it alone. Fear and failure is part of the journey, make it your friend, you will learn from all the things that go wrong more than all the rights.
What has been the toughest challenge being your own boss? Being in such a high position? Ironically, we say ask for help but one of the biggest challenges is to trust others or delegate to others. You can get so stuck on doing this yourself because you think you know best and also it can be hard at times to take your own good advice. But delegating some of the work will mean you have more time to become better at what it is that has made you the boss.
What is the best thing about being your own boss? We set our own hours, creativity hits at some unusual hours of the day so it's great to be able to react to it.
Seven random facts about yourselves 1. We share the same Birthday, Happy Gemini season.
