How do you know what each crystal is? What does a crystal's colour mean? Where do crystals come from? These are the burning questions I had at the beginning of my crystal journey. I thought I’d use this blog to address and answer those questions! When you’re first learning about crystals it’s natural to feel overwhelmed and a little confused over all the different names and colours. Then as you develop your crystal knowledge you’ll start to build a crystal directory in your mind and gradually it’ll come to make more and more sense. Personally one of my favourite things about the world of crystals is that no matter how much I learn I feel like there’s always more to find out! There's a limitless potential to the knowledge we can all acquire about these gifts from the universe.
I’ve been studying towards an advanced diploma in crystal healing, and learning about the geological formation of crystals has been the part I’ve found the most interesting. I think once you understand where crystals come from and how unique their formations are, your appreciation for them deepens. In a nutshell, the earth has a vast array of minerals and metal deposits deep within its core, and in certain circumstances these mineral solutions can grow and produce crystals with therapeutic properties. Depending on the conditions at the time, the crystals can grow really slowly over years and years, or they can actually stop and start again! That’s why sometimes you may notice misshapen crystals, because they may have started developing in one direction only to start to grow in another later on.
Crystals can grow deep in the earth where ancient rivers used to run, they can grow in geodes from air bubbles formed in volcanic rocks, and the layers in some crystals can be built up over millions of years. I like to think crystals are full of sacred ancient wisdom and by respecting them and tapping into their energy we can access that wisdom. You may have heard of Zircon crystals, these were formed 4.4 billion years ago and behold intense spiritual energy!
When shopping for crystals you can identify them pretty quickly in a few different ways. It could be by the colour, the chakra it resonates with, or the zodiac sign it resonates with and in most crystal shops they will be labelled with the name of the stone and a brief description of its properties. I have found the best way to build up a confidence in taking about and using crystals is to research! To read a tone of books about them, follow crystal healing experts on their social media accounts, watch videos and just immerse yourself in learning.
Identifying crystals by colour can be really challenging, but it’s a great place to start. I’m going to leave you with my guide of colour meanings for crystals. Next time you go shopping or you just want to know what crystals you could get if you’re seeking the healing properties of a particular colour, you can refer to this.
